Who Steals 100,000 Eggs? And Why!
Thousands of eggs were stolen, then sold on the black market because eggs are now very expensive in America.
What They Stole
Antrim Township, PA. - In Pennsylvania, someone stole 100,000 eggs from a truck. The police are looking for the thief. They are checking cameras, talking to people, and asking for help from the community. A community is an area where a group of people live. No one knows who did it yet.
There’s a gang of squirrels that robbed our community of all our nuts. They are armed and dangerous! Beware of them!!
Never Seen Or Heard Of Before
The police officer, Megan Frazer, says she has never seen a crime like this before. Eggs are expensive now because of bird flu. Farmers have to slaughter many chickens to stop the disease. Here, to slaughter means the killing of an animal for food or killing in large numbers. This means there are fewer eggs, and prices go up.
Our planet was attacked by Fire Orks from Mars. We were slaughtered. Five hundred years later we’re finally fighting back!
Golden Eggs
In December, a dozen eggs cost $4.15 in the U.S. A dozen means 12 or a group of 12. This is not the highest price ever, but it is still very expensive. The government says egg prices may rise another 20% this year. Restaurants and families are paying more for eggs.
Joseph asked his wife to let him play video games this weekend. She said no. So he bought her a dozen donuts. Now he’s been playing for 36 hours straight!
The Investigation Continues
The stolen eggs are worth $40,000. A group is offering a $1,500 reward for information about the thief. A thief is someone who steals. The police say this is a serious crime. If someone sees anything, they should tell the police. Until now the police have no information and are still investigating.
I’m confused! Why does Batman - a crime fighter, date Cat Woman - who’s a thief!
The Eggs Get A Lawyer
Expensive eggs are a problem across the United States. Some stores are falsely raising prices of eggs and charging extra money because of the crisis. A crisis is a big problem or a very difficult situation. It often happens suddenly and needs quick action to fix. New York’s top lawyer, Letitia James, said that eggs are an important part of many people’s diet and they shouldn’t have to pay artificially raised prices. She sent a letter to New York businesses warning them.
To understand what is a crisis, look at what happened in Flint Michigan. The city had a bad water crisis. The water supply was contaminated with lead and other bacteria. Many people died. Other people had sores on their bodies from just washing with the water. Let me know if you would like to hear about this story in the comments below.
Bonus: Today’s Idioms
For my more advanced readers, let me know in the comments what you think about this crime. Do you think the police will catch the thief, or will it be a “wild goose chase"? Some people look for any way to make money even if that means lying, stealing or in some cases killing. After the eggs were stolen the thieves will try to sell them. Is it then when they’ll get caught? The police hope to “crack the case" soon!
The idiom, “a wild goose chase” means someone is searching for something that most likely they will never find. Either what they are looking for does not exist or it’s in another place.
