The Mexican “goddess” Of Death
The remains of hundreds of people have been discovered that were sacrificed to a Mexican goddess (a devil) called Santa Meurte or Saint of the dead.
A Hidden Camp
A group of volunteers in Mexico found a secret camp where criminals tortured and killed people. Here, the word torture means to cause great physical or emotional pain to a person or an animal intentionally. This camp had big ovens used to burn bodies. The volunteers were looking for missing family members when they found this terrible place. The police knew about the site but did not check it well.
In places like this around the world, many people have been tortured for centuries.
A Scary Discovery
The volunteers found many human bones and personal items like shoes and clothes. There were things that belonged to women and children. Hundreds of shoes showed that many people were victims. A victim is someone who is hurt, injured, or killed by a person, group, or event. A security expert said the place was like the Nazi camps from history.
Their city had hundreds of thousands of victims after the earthquake. There were too many dead and not enough living to help.
Look What I Found
The volunteers got information from Facebook and went to the site near Guadalajara (which is Mexico’s second largest city). They found three big underground ovens. They used simple tools to examine the ground and there they discovered burned bones. To examine is to look at something closely and carefully. The camp was used for killing then destroying the evidence.
When doctor Sarah examined the soil at the sacrifice temple, she found the remains of hundreds of different people.
Their “god” is a devil.
The camp had statues of Santa Muerte, a goddess some criminals believe protects them. Gangs built altars for her and sometimes gave human sacrifices. To sacrifice is to give a gift, or to kill a person or an animal to “a god” as an act of worship. A former gang member said they kidnapped children from towns and killed them in front of the statue. This goddess is worshipped in many places throughout Central and South America; there are also temples in the state of California.
Pagans sacrifice and offer many different thing to their gods: cups of water, cigars, milk, animals and even humans.
The Police And The Cartel Coorperate
The police visited the site before but did not find all the evidence. The dangerous Jalisco New Generation Cartel is suspected of running the camp. They tricked people with fake jobs and forced them to join the gang. If they refused, they were punished or killed. To refuse means to not accept or agree to something. Another similar camp was later found in the city of Reynosa, showing that this problem is bigger than people thought.
James could not refuse the offer of 1 billion dollars over the next 10 years.
Bonus: Today’s Idiom
If you have read and/or listened to this article then you have to write to me in the comments. For my more advanced readers, what do you think about this story? Sadly, Satanism is alive in many places of the world. As we learned here, this “goddess” is worshiped publicly throughout the Americas and even in the United States. Yet there are other rituals that are done privately that involve the kidnap, torture and then murder of people: men, women and children - for this goddess (devil). Additionally, this is made worse by the Mexican police not getting involved and looking the other way. Without a doubt, the worst, the most evil of all sins is the sin of polytheism.
The idiom, look the other way, means to ignore something that is wrong or illegal. When someone “looks the other way” they, in a way, are allowing the problem to continue.
